All You Need to Know About the Canal de la Marne au Rhin

All You Need to Know About the Canal de la Marne au Rhin

For your next barge holiday in France, why not travel down the Canal de la Marne au Rhin and discover the wonders of Alsace-Lorraine. Its complex history has made it a beautiful crossroads of French and German culture, creating the iconic wooden-beamed houses, delicious Alsatian wines and even their very own dialect. There are a variety of landscapes to admire along the way too, including rolling vineyards, breathtaking mountains and historical cities.
Length and Route

The Canal de la Marne au Rhin is a 313-kilometre-long stretch of water that links Paris to Alsace and Germany. An excellent route for a barge holiday in France starts in Vitry-le-François and continues towards the historic town of Bar-le-Duc. You can then travel down towards Nancy, first passing through Toul, to finish a little beyond the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

History and Feats of Engineering

Completed in 1855, the Canal de la Marne au Rhin posed a few major issues to the engineers who designed it – mainly, how to pass through the Vosges mountains and reach the Col de Saverne. Initially the canal was made to rise gradually by passing through a seventeen-lock ladder, which would create a 44-metre level change over 4 kilometres. This technique was used until 1969, at which time it was replaced by the Saint Louis Arzviller inclined plane. With this new system, the barge enters a large caisson and is either lifted or lowered up or down the slope thanks to a counter balancing weight. On a barge holiday in France with European Waterways, you’ll be 1 of 39 barges to use it. It should take about 20 minutes to complete the full journey (including entering and exiting the caisson). It is an ingenious system that uses very little electricity and only requires two men to monitor it.

Attractions en Route

Following the Canal de la Marne au Rhin lets you explore all the Alsace-Moselle region has to offer. You won’t want to pass up on the opportunity of discovering the Lehrer Crystal Glassworks once you have passed over the Arzviller slope, or of exploring the historical city of Strasbourg and taking a tour around the renowned family-run Meteor Brewery when you reach Alsace. The Lehrer Crystal Glassworks lets you immerse yourself in the world of glassblowing as you watch experts craft and cut fine glass. Once you’ve ticked that off your list, I’d recommend visiting the Cathedral in Strasbourg, with its gorgeous Gothic-style architecture, its beautifully detailed stained-glass windows and intricately carved gargoyles. There are 332 steps to climb to reach the top, but the view from up there is well worth the effort. You should also have a wander around the windy streets of La Petit France to see the picturesque Alsatian houses lined with colourful geraniums. You can then head to the Meteor Brewery. It offers guided tours on which you’ll learn the six complex stages of creating and blending that goes into making the unique flavour of this 400-year-old beer. It wouldn’t be a barge holiday in France without a little culture!

A Barger’s Guide to the Canal du Nivernais

A Barger’s Guide to the Canal du Nivernais

Amongst the beautiful inland waterways of France, the Canal du Nivernais offers a scenic cruising route through the bucolic, history-laden landscape of Burgundy. Originally created as a feeder waterway along which to float firewood, today it has a very different incarnation as a popular route for the new breed of barge holidays in France.
A Working Waterway

The 174km-long Canal du Nivernais serves as part of the wider Bourbonnais and Bourgogne link between Paris and Lyon. It runs north-south between the basin of the Seine (at Paris) and the Saône and Rhône, almost parallel to the Yonne. Along the way it connects the Yonne with the Loire at Auxerre and Decize, respectively. Its strategic position was no accident and, in 1783, the French government commissioned its construction as a channel to transport the firewood so desperately needed by the freezing residents of Paris.

It was many more years before it reached completion (in 1843), but it then became a vital transportation hub for everything from wood and wine, to coal, stone and charcoal. The canal is fed by the Yonne and also from the north by another feeder canal leading from the Pannecière Reservoir, via the beautifully-constructed and much-admired Montreuillon aqueduct.

There are 122 locks and 23 dams along its length and in one section three tunnels have been hewn from solid rock to allow its passage. Travelling through the tunnels has been described as a silence so complete it is akin to “the silence of a sepulchre”. Despite the magnificent feat of engineering required to complete its course, many of the locks were constructed to what were deemed ‘sub-standard’ specifications. This meant that with a length of only 30m, some of them were unable to accommodate larger barges, leading to a decline in the waterway’s usefulness.

It wasn’t until the 1960s that the local authorities saw the potential of the Canal du Nivernais as a touristic attraction, and an extensive decade-long rehabilitation programme was implemented. The works provided facilities and mooring for private and commercial vessels along the route, which has enabled operators to include the canal on the itinerary of their barge holidays in France. A host of surrounding attractions can be enjoyed from the water and on shore-based excursions.

Attractions en Route One of the most popular attractions en route is the magnificent Saint-Germain Abbey, in Auxerre. Dating back more than a thousand years, the monastic complex contains a veritable treasure trove of history within its cloistered walls. Along with the oldest wall paintings in the country, archaeologists have unearthed a sarcophagus from the sixth century and the crypts, nave and tower of the abbey are almost completely intact.

Something a little more energetic that can be undertaken along the canal route at the lovely village of Merry-sur-Yonne is climbing at the famous landmark, Le Saussois. This imposing crag set against a highly picturesque backdrop is renowned as one of the most challenging climbing sites in the country, although there are plenty of pre-bolted areas for novices to cut their teeth as well.

With a reputation as one of the most interesting and enjoyable places for barge holidays in France, the history, engineering and scenery of the Canal du Nivernais serve as an important reminder of the past and a delightful insight into the present.

Cyber-Lovemaking: More Options Now than ever

Cyber-Lovemaking: More Options Now than ever

Cyber-romance is one of the wonders of modern times for long-distance couples and also for those who enjoy sensual anonymous encounters. Internet and proliferation of smartphones allow different people to connect through words, pictures and videos, and curly people must have found a naughty way to use this capability. For those who are very interested in video chat, there is a lot of news: There are now sensual toys and virtual platforms designed just for this purpose. Because sensual health is vital to overall wellbeing, it is important to harness one’s desires and find safe and attractive ways to meet their needs. For some people, taking advantage of sophisticated cyber-romance options will be a mere ticket.

Cyber-Lovemaking: More Options Now than ever
Features to Consider

When people search for video sensual chat options, they need to be aware of two important features. One of them is the type of platform used. Is it safe Does it only take two people to access, or open to many individuals, like in social media?

Second, what kind of toys are involved? The astonishing technological advances have led to the creation of a truly interactive, sensual toy, as it allows one person to control other people’s toys with the “remote” function of Bluetooth or their toys respond to their respective motion and speed.

Kiiroo

The Kiiroo set for the pair contains a replica of the body organ “Pearl” for her and the “Onyx” arm for herself. Both toys interact with each other via Bluetooth, and the package also contains a video chat platform.

An onyx contract to mimic the contraction of a female organ, and does not require the effort of the man; it contracts in conjunction with the use of the woman of her Pearl, wherever she is in the world. In this way, long distance lovers can be seen and physically simulate the sensual activity of each other.

Male and female couples can buy Kiiroo at a discount of $ 369.00. The company also offers packages for same sex couples, priced at $ 468.00 (Onyx is more expensive than Pearl). Individual toys can be purchased at a slightly higher price than when purchased as part of a set.

LovePalz Twist

Like Kiiroo, LovePalz Twist is a product line that features fun toys for itself. Also like Kiiroo, it comes with a virtual platform where lovers can watch each other. They can also control the toys with each other.

What distinguishes CintaPalz with Kiiroo is the social media function it has. LovePalz Club is where users can create profiles, connect with other users and conduct virtual sensual activity sessions with people they know and strangers. This is also good for those who fear rejection, because “Like” someone will only be seen by other users if he also sends “Like.”

LovePalz Twist is more affordable than Onyx and Pearl; Female twist is valid for $ 79.00, while Twist men cost $ 89.00.

Security

When using sensual toys, one should make sure to practice proper hygiene and care. The toys should be thoroughly washed with a mild cleanser, dried and kept in a clean place (many come with special storage bags).

Whether using a vibrator or a sleeve, it’s good to use a lubricant. This can help prevent friction and tear the skin and organs of men.

Men can take extra steps to protect their skin from being upset, making it more attractive to people at the end of their video chat session. Using a male organ health cream (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil) with a natural moisturizer will make their skin vibrant, soft and smooth – and while their chat couple can not really touch their members, men can bet that they will want it . Coupling Injury: When Faith Irritation is Only Beginning

Coupling Injury: When Faith Irritation is Only Beginning

Most men have heard a story about a horrible coupling session that causes more than a few sore muscles and some aggravation. Actually, many men have handled various clutch-related injuries of his time. Though the worst of the worst is quite rare (such as a broken member who feels horrified), there are some injuries that may not be considered men until it is too late. So, as part of the care of responsible members, one must know all the wrong things – and how to avoid the potentially painful intimate wounds. Coupling Injury: When Faith Irritation is Only Beginning

Decrease in clutch injury

Though the broken member is everyone’s nightmare, fortunately the incident is very rare. These other injuries, however, are a bit more common.

1. Bruised sacks. This is sometimes the result of overzealous cowboy action, which usually ends with a pounding enthusiasm – and not just the annoyance that can happen. The sacks can feel pain, bruises and swelling. In most cases, a little time and maybe some ice can help reduce it, but for serious injuries, the sack may need to be dried – and that certainly is not a pleasant situation.

2. Cracked skin. Yes, enough to make people cringe. This is why lubricants are a great thing. Both partners can experience serious irritation, redness and even tear on the skin if there is not enough lube to keep things running smoothly. For a man, it can extend to a torn skin in a sack or member, which can take time to heal and can even invite infection.

3. Torn abs. One night of happiness is quite physical, and it takes some serious core power. But a night that is too intense or suddenly moving in the wrong direction can lead to torn muscles. No one sneezes – this is a painful injury that makes a man look at a star. To avoid this, be careful when trying new positions that look a bit too athletic even for the most agile men though.

4. Classic Hernia. When a man lifts something too heavy, does not lift it properly, or else puts up a groin area, he can wind up with a hernia. Although some hernias are not painful, some are torturing – and a man does not know which one he will get until the moment he gets them. To avoid a hernia, avoid lifting your partner. Maintaining a healthy weight can also help avoid a hernia.

Heart attack. No, the old story about a heart attack while inside a sack is not a myth. Think of it: Combine the level of excitement and prolonged physical activity, and add a little bit of poor cardiovascular health, and maybe lack of normal exercise, and serious problems in brewing. If everything seems too tight, call back a bit – and know the signs of a heart attack. Do not hesitate to ask for emergency help if any of these signs occur when being agile. Coupling Injury: When Faith Irritation is Only Beginning

Although these injuries may sound scary, the good news is that they are relatively rare and likely will not happen. The most common clutch injuries, so far, are the cruel annoyance and redness – and that can be handled easily with the fantastic male organ health creme (health professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil, which is clinically proven to be mild and safe for the skin). Smart people will reach for a crème that contains vitamin C, known for helping skin elasticity, and vitamin D, which works to improve cellular function. But the most important ingredients for clogged members are Shea butter and vitamin E, both of which are proven to soothe and heal even the most delicate skin. The River Thames: A Guide to Barging

The River Thames: A Guide to Barging

The River Thames is the spine, the lifeblood and the main attraction of one of the best-known and historically important cities on the planet. But while the section that flows through London is certainly the most high profile, the 215 miles of the Thames slice England, stretching from the Cotswolds at Cirencester, through rural towns and villages to Oxford, London and finally emptying out into the North Sea.
Historically, the Thames has been a vital trade route right back to Roman times. Today, while the Port of London handles around 10% of the entire country’s commercial shipping, the quieter sections of the waterway appeal to private leisure vessels and barge cruise operators.

Built On a River

When the Romans arrived in Britain in AD 43, they settled at the most strategic site on the river to build their city, Londinium. From the port they traded extensively throughout the Mediterranean and also made roads to link the capital with the rest of the country. It was the Romans who built the first bridge to span the river, on the site that would later be the crossing of the city’s famous London Bridge.

Bridges and Locks

The bridges that were built across the Thames have become icons of engineering in themselves. Tower Bridge is one of the most acclaimed, and has been an instantly recognisable landmark of the capital since its construction in 1894. The incredible mechanism that allows for its raising and lowering still functions with perfect precision. Westminster Bridge sits under the shadow of Big Ben and is considered one of the most elegant of all in terms of its architecture. The Millennium Footbridge is the city’s newest, opened in 2000 and crossing the river at St Paul’s Cathedral.

There are 45 locks along the river and each has its own history; some date back to the 1500s while others were variously constructed through the 1700-1800s. While in earlier times weirs were built in order to divert the flow of the water to use in mills, as the traffic increased, many of these were converted or used alongside locks, to allow the passage of vessels to navigate the fall of the river. Today, for those on a barge cruise, navigating the locks is one of the most interesting and anticipated parts of the experience.

Attractions en Route

The beauty of exploring the route of the Thames by barge cruise is the constant accompaniment of scenic views and historical and cultural attractions. Runneymede, the site where King John signed the highly significant Magna Carta document, is a popular disembarkation point. As well as the official monument to the event, the lovely woodlands are filled with wildlife and walking paths.

Windsor Castle is another high profile attraction that can be visited along the river, and the oldest and largest castle in the world lives up to the pomp and grandeur of its reputation (the Queen may even be in residence). At Henley-on-Thames, the renowned River and Rowing Museum celebrates not only the river itself, but also the international sport of rowing for which the town has become globally recognised.

Meandering Through History

The elegant curves of the Thames have defined the history of Britain in so many ways. The privilege of being able to traverse its length on a modern day barge cruise offers a unique insight and a truly memorable way in which to see to the country.

Paul Newman is the Marketing and E-Systems Executive for European Waterways, the UK’s most respected provider of all-inclusive, luxury barge cruise itineraries. Part of a team of experienced barging aficionados, Paul is first in line to endorse the perks of a slow-paced barge cruise to anyone looking for a unique holiday experience.
